Most connection trouble comes down to one of a few things standing between your device and your console on your local network. Work down this list before anything else.

The app can't find your console

Telemetry not enabled in the game
The game only broadcasts telemetry once it is turned on in its own network settings. Check the game's settings menu and confirm telemetry output is enabled before opening Knurl.
Device and console on different networks
Your device and your console need to be on the same Wi-Fi network and the same subnet. A phone on cellular data, or a device connected to a different Wi-Fi band or a neighboring network, will not find the console. Confirm both are on the exact same network.
Guest network or client isolation
Guest Wi-Fi networks and some mesh routers isolate devices from each other by design, even though both are on the same Wi-Fi name. Move your device and console onto the main network, or disable AP isolation / client isolation in your router settings.
iOS Local Network permission declined
Knurl needs the Local Network permission to find your console on your Wi-Fi. If it was declined, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network, find Knurl, and turn it on. Restart the app afterward.
Console asleep or in rest mode
The console has to be powered on and running the game for telemetry to broadcast. Wake it and make sure the game is the active, running title.

Built-in connection troubleshooter

Knurl ships a connection troubleshooter in the app. It runs an ordered set of checks (network reachability, whether packets are arriving, whether they decode correctly), tells you in plain language which step failed, and gives you a one-tap way to share the result if you write in for help.
